URGENT Alert from the NAC: San Onofre Beach

In brief, the Director of California's Department of Parks and Recreation has announced that the application of a nearly 30-year state policy respecting traditional nude use in certain sections of state parks will be revoked at San Onofre Beach.  Citations for nudity in that location are to start being issued on July 1 (after a one-month period of warnings).  This change is the result of new department management intolerant of clothing-optional recreation and ongoing reports of sexual activity at the neighboring beach at Camp Pendleton. Rich Haydon, the new manager who took over at the beginning of this month, has featured the nearby sexual activity in his reports, using it as an excuse to request permission to put an end to recreational nudity at the beach. Haydon has reportedly represented to his superiors that a majority of those who come to enjoy the clothing-optional beach are participants in illicit sex there.

While this change applies only to the named beach for now, there is a concern that it could affect other locations in the future, if unchallenged.

 

NAC Update: NAC reports that there has been a tremendous response by naturists writing to the California Department of Parks and Recreation to express their objections to the planned termination of nude use at San Onofre Beach.  NAC has taken a number of other measures as well.  Although the start of enforcement has been pushed back from July 1 to after Labor Day, this change in the application of policy remains in the works for now. NAC is requesting all concerned naturists, but especially those in California, to: Contact the Director of the California Department of Parks and Recreation to express your objections (if you have not already done so), and If you live close enough, (continue to) visit the traditionally nude section of San Onofre Beach, and record and report to NAC the details of any exchange with rangers (who have been instructed to inform beach users of the planned change).
